AITHM facilities will be developed in Cairns, which will include a new research building on Smithfield campus, as well as renovated space in existing building E1.

Project initiation has commenced with Project Control Groups and User Groups being established and Terms of Reference being endorsed. The facilities will provide laboratory research and training faciltiies to:

  • investigate parasites and viruses which present significant health risks for Australia and it's regional neighbours;
  • train public health and disease control workers for regional Australia;
  • develop diagnostic and surveillance techniques for tropical diseases with high incursion risk and diseases that have a high incidence in regional areas'
  • investigate bioactive compounds with therapeutic potential found in tropical plants and animals.
