AITHM facilities will be developed in the Torres Strait to support preliminary infectious disease screening, with a focus on tuberculosis and vector-borne diseases.

Negotiations for land tenure are underway to secure a site on Thursday Island. The University is in negotiations with State Government and local commuity groups to acquire a parcel of land on Thursday Island near the current hospital site.

The site will house laboratory research and training facilities which will:

  • enable preliminary infrctious disease sample indentification and processing;
  • provide an essential platform for AITHM staff and collaborators to undertake effective research at the front line of Australia's defence against incursion.
